Functioning would be better with a gig of RAM, but I'thousand satisfied enough with what I've got that I oasis't moved on that. For a 400 MHz G3 Pismo I would suggest OS 10.3.9 Panther.
And, of course, the Classic Mac OS 9 just flies on any Pismo model.
FireWire Clamshell iBook (366 and 466 MHz)
